The pedagogical development of an international teacher in the cultural context of Finnish CLIL home economics
2016
This thesis draws on content and language integrated learning (CLIL) as a methodological innovation in language education. In order to become competent CLIL teachers in 21st century, however, teachers should not merely have expertise knowledge in their own teaching fields but take pedagogical tact into consideration. The aim of this qualitative action research is to understand: (1) How an international teacher from Taiwan utilized the theoretical framework of CLIL 4Cs and (2) How 4Cs were used as a support to develop pedagogical tact in CLIL home economics classes in a Finnish lower secondary school. The action research approach and process were conducted in two cycles that included plannin…

Between facts and norms: action research in the light of Jürgen Habermas's theory of communicative action and discourse theory of justice1
1998
Abstract An emphasis on democracy is typical of action research. Therefore, theories of modern democracy can be applied within the field of school development through action research. According to Jurgen Habermas, the promotion of democratic will formation requires the promotion of free and rational communicative action that is as free from manipulation as possible. Under ideal communicative conditions, consensus is achieved dialectically through the force of a better argument. The principles of rational argumentation have been developed in detail in Habermas's publications on discourse ethics and in The Theory of Communicative Action. He has recently developed his approach in a book entitl…
Extending and validating gestUI using technical action research
2017
gestUI is a model-driven method with tool support to define custom gestures and to include gesture-based interaction in existing user software system interfaces. So far, gestUI had been limited to the definition of the same gesture catalogue for all users of the software system. In this paper, we extend gestUI to permit individual users to define their own custom gesture catalogue and redefine some custom gestures in case of difficulty in using or remembering them. After extending gestUI, we applied technical action research from the FP7 CaaS project's Capability Design Tool with the aim of assessing its acceptance in an industrial setting. We also analysed its perceived ease-of-use and use…
Technical issues in beginning violin: an exploratory study in the classroom with 4-5 years old preschoolers
2018
Teaching English as a Non-Imperial Language in an Underprivileged Public School in Spain
2018
This article summarizes the processes and findings of a 2-year collaborative action research (CAR) project that analyzed and aimed to counteract some of the most negative educational effects of English linguistic imperialism in the field of English language teaching (ELT) and, more concretely, in the context of English as a foreign language education in Spain. The CAR investigated the ramifications of this phenomenon in a primary school located in one of the most disadvantaged neighborhoods in the city of València. The pedagogical alternative it embraced in order to reverse the underlying tenets of ELT under present-day neoliberal imperialism consisted in combining art and multimodality thr…
Who and how? : Preservice teachers as active agents developing professional identities
2016
Abstract This study is part of an ongoing action research project with preservice class teachers in Finland. The study aims to better understand the forms agency takes in preservice teachers' professional identity development. Through the dialogical analysis of student assignments, this study outlines how student teachers are active within their own development and the way in which experiences are drawn on as preservice teachers exert their identity-agency. The results of this study provide a relational picture of identity development highlighting the way in which identity-agency is contextualized, potentially nourished by the relationships between self and other and dependent on experience.
